This exclusive Sydney exhibition offers an extraordinary immersion in the breadth and depth of Henri Matisse’s art. One of the world’s most beloved, innovative and influential artists. Developed in collaboration with the Center Pompidou in Paris, which holds an exceptional collection of works by the artist. Matisse: Life & Spirit, Masterpieces from the Center Pompidou. Paris is the largest single exhibition of Matisse’s masterpieces ever to be seen in Sydney.

The Pain of the King 1952.

Ranging from his first adventures in color as a fauvist to the serene and distilled drawings of his chapel in Vence. The exhibition follows Matisse’s research through six decades. Through paintings. Drawings. Sculptures and a convincing presentation of his triumphant cutouts. It reveals how Matisse has renewed his vision time and time again during his long career. Looking for new ways to celebrate the world as seen and to express the energy he felt there. Highlights include the particularly important early work Le Luxe I 1907. The Mid-Career Masterpiece Decorative figure on an ornamental background 1925. Also, the majestic self-portrait, The Pain of the King 1952, one of the largest of the famous cutouts that the artist created at the end of his career.
