Yoko Matsumoto’s second exhibition with the gallery features paintings created by the artist between the 1980s and early 2000s. Producing her abstract, labour-intensive canvases during periods of deep concentration, the artist addresses colour in a processual and meditative manner, elaborately layering hues to create a tracery of nebulous forms and gestures. With an embodied knowledge of her medium, Matsumoto works within the sobering space of painting itself to both mine and liberate the capricious essences of colour and light.

1967.

Citing her first visit to New York in 1967, where she became profoundly influenced by the works of American Abstract Expressionists such as Morris Louis and Helen Frankenthaler, this exhibition marks Matsumoto’s return to the city after almost three decades.

The exhibition is organised in collaboration with Hino Gallery.
