Cherry Blossoms is Damien Hirst’s first museum exhibition in France. The Cherry Blossoms series reinterprets, with playful irony, the traditional subject of landscape painting. Hirst combines thick brush strokes and elements of gestural painting. It refers to both impressionism and pointillism, as well as action painting.

Figuration and abstraction.

The monumental canvases, entirely covered in bright and dense colors, envelop the viewer in a vast floral landscape. Oscillating between figuration and abstraction.

The Cherry Blossoms are both a subversion and a tribute to the great artistic movements of the late 19th and 20th centuries. They are an integral part of Hirst’s long pictorial exploration.

The exhibition, in response to an invitation from Hervé Chandès, Director General of the Fondation Cartier, to Damien Hirst during a meeting in London in 2019, presents around thirty paintings selected by Hervé Chandès and the artist. Borrowing the space designed by Jean Nouvel. The canvases, covered with thick and vibrant paint, absorb the viewer into the paintings.
