Cartier Foundation – Until March 7, 2021 Paris (France)
Reopening from Dec 16, 2020

For her second solo exhibition at the Fondation Cartier, the American artist Sarah Sze has created an immersive exhibition that transforms the perception of spaces while transparency of the building created by Jean Nouvel.

Created specifically for this exhibition. Twice Twilight and Tracing Fallen Sky are the latest sculptures in the Timekeeper series, which began in 2015. These two works question both the status of the image. And our apprehension of the virtual and material worlds, which merge together. The structure of these two installations is inspired by age-old tools. The planetarium and the pendulum. Designed to deploy the map of the cosmos. Measure the rotation of the Earth.

Time and space.

Sarah Sze has always been interested in scientific models. Tools for measuring time and space. Rationalizing the world around us. Sarah Sze plays with spectacular scales. From the sun’s vast trajectory to the tiny kindling of a match. Thus illustrating the mystery and complexity specific to our attempts at measurement. Modeling of time and space. Considering the essence of these concepts. The artist captures the wonder. But also the futility that characterizes our desire to understand. Which will always remain beyond our reach.
