Salman Toor “How shall I know”
Whitney Museum of American Art – Until April 4, 2021 New-York (US)
For his first personal exhibition at the museum. Salman Toor (born 1983) presents new and recent oil paintings. Known for his small-scale figurative works that combine academic technique and a rapid sketching style. Toor offers intimate views of imagined life. Young queer brown men living between New York and Southeast Asia. Recurring color palettes. References to the history of art reinforce the emotional impact of Toor’s paintings. He adds a fantastic element to his personal stories.
Taken as a whole. Toor’s paintings consider vulnerability in contemporary public and private life. The notion of community in the context of queer and diasporic identity.
