Jasper Johns: Spirit / Mirror
Whitney Museum – Sep 29 to Feb 13 2022 New-York (US)
The radical and inventive art of Jasper Johns (b.1930) continues to influence artists today like few others. In an unprecedented collaboration. The Whitney and the Philadelphia Museum of Art will be hosting a simultaneous retrospective. The greatest of Johns’ seven-decade career. Thus, it offers a new vision of the living legend. From its iconic flags to lesser-known and recent works, the exhibition will feature paintings. Sculptures. Drawings and prints. Almost 500 works of art in the two museums, many of which are from Johns’ personal collection and will be on display to the public for the first time.
The mirror and the doubles.
Inspired by the artist’s long-standing fascination with the mirror and doubles. Each half of the exhibition will act as a reflection of the other. Inviting spectators to take a close look to discover the themes. The methods and coded visual language that resonate in both places. A visit to either museum will provide a vivid chronological overview. A visit to both will offer an innovative and immersive exploration of the many phases. Masterpieces and mysteries of Johns’ ever-evolving career.
